Millard Girls in Mexico City
In May 2019 I went to Mexico City for the first time. I went with Cindee and Meredith, my mother-in-law and sister-in-law. Meredith is basically the Mexico City expert as she’s been many times and is almost fluent in Spanish. She planned our trip so I have to give her credit for these fabulous recommendations!
I immediately fell in love with Mexico City. It’s not like Cancun or other parts of Mexico I’ve been to before; it feels like a European city. There are cobblestone streets, lots of parks, local markets, delicious food and everything is colorful. Also most things are super affordable! One thing that surprised me is everyone speaks Spanish (I know I sound like a spoiled American)… luckily my six years of Spanish classes somewhat came back to me.
Where to Stay
We stayed in an Airbnb in Condesa. Condesa is a safe and cute neighborhood. I arrived first and walked around the neighborhood by myself - I shopped for flowers, had a few pastries and waited for the others to arrive. I highly recommend looking for an apartment rental or hotel in this location. It’s also easy to call an Uber to take you wherever you need to go.
Where to Eat
Pujol - A gorgeous restaurant with 7+ courses that’s famous for its super aged mole sauce (note on the menu it says 1881 days!). This is perfect for a special occasion, but definitely make a reservation in advance.
Cantina de Guadalupana in Coyoacan
Terraza at Gran Hotel - Great buffet brunch with an even better view. Also where they filmed James Bond.
El Moro - The best churros ever. We went there for a late night snack of churros and various chocolate dipping sauces.
What to Do
Frida’s House - This was amazing and so much more than an art museum. Make sure to buy tickets in advance.
Palacio Nacional de Mexico - Diego Rivera Murals
Xochimilco River Cruise - One of my favorite and most unique things to do in Mexico City. It’s a little far to get to, but it’s a cheap Uber and totally worth it. We paid $20 for a private boat for an hour and there’s endless entertainment along the river. Bring cash to purchase margaritas or trinkets on the ride.
Chaputlpec Castle, Forest and Danza
Ritual of the Voladores - This is a crazy cultural show where men fly in the air connected to a large pole. They play music and wear traditional clothing. We saw the show outside the Anthropology museum; it’s free but tips are encourage. I’d highly recommend if you’re in the area.
La Ciudadela Market - A beautiful and must-see market. Make sure to bring cash (and maybe an extra suitcase). I came home with a quilt, copper vases, a nativity scene and more…
I hope this is helpful on your next trip to Mexico City.
Happy travels!
